Counseling

Throughout our lives, we face many challenges. Sometimes it is helpful to meet with a counselor to help us sort through the issues related to the ministry, marriage or a personal crisis that we are facing. Fairhaven Ministries is thankful to have a very qualified and experienced counselor who is able to give help to God's servants who may be wounded. The counselor is also available to meet with people who are seeking God's will for their future and would appreciate some help in sorting through the possibilities. He also is available to give "check-ups" to access the health of a relationship and help it to continue to grow in positive direction.

Q: WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF FAIRHAVEN’S COUNSELOR?

A:  Stuart Coleman is a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider Designation.  He holds both a Master of Arts Degree in Christian Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Professional Counseling.  Stuart has earned specializations in trauma therapy, Christian sex therapy, and Christian spirituality.  While committed to continuing research and evidence-based treatment protocols, Stuart trusts God to heal, transform, and restore individuals, couples, and families as a Christ-Centered Licensed Professional Counselor.

Q: WHO SEEKS COUNSELING AT FAIRHAVEN?

A:  Fairhaven was established as a safe place for pastors, missionaries, and other Christian workers to find rest and help.  Lay persons are also welcome to take advantage of the facilities as well as the counseling.

Q: ARE THERE ANY DENOMINATIONAL TIES?

A:  Fairhaven serves all denominations and mission boards. As such, there is no intention to promote any particular doctrinal teaching that would be identified with a particular church or denomination.  Instead, it is our desire to rest in our shared agreement with the fundamentals of the Christian faith as found in God’s Word and to allow those truths to inform the counseling process.

Q:  WHAT IS THE APPROACH USED FOR COUNSELING AT FAIRHAVEN?

A:  Fairhaven believes that the Bible remains the only sure foundation for faith and practice and that it is Christ’s living presence in and through His people, by His Holy Spirit, that provides true hope for lasting change and transformation.  We believe that God can and does guide His people in discoveries and findings that may contribute to greater personal health and well-being.  Our counselor finds value and benefit in following biblically sound, empirically supported, scientific and psychological approaches to the counseling process.

Q: WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF FAIRHAVEN’S COUNSELING PROGRAM?

A:  The counselor utilizes an intensive structure with each appointment typically lasting for two hours.  Guests are asked to arrive at Fairhaven on Sunday or Monday so they can be rested for their counseling appointments beginning on Tuesday.  Tuesday morning our counselor usually meets with the individual or couple for a two-hour appointment to gather a history of the presenting issues and to determine reasonable goals for the remainder of the counseling sessions.  Depending upon an individual or couple’s particular needs, the individual or couple may meet for up to three or four additional two-hour sessions beginning on Tuesday afternoon and ending on Thursday evening.  However, a substantial portion of Wednesday and Friday is usually set apart for rest and relaxation with limited amounts of homework being assigned between counseling sessions on these days.

Q: HOW LONG SHOULD WE STAY TO GET HELP?

A:  The decision as to the length of stay involves finding a balance between the level of need, the freedom afforded to be away from responsibilities, and the ability to cover the expenses of lodging and counseling. For most guests, a one-week stay may be sufficient. Typically, when long-term counseling is indicated or when follow-up is advised, guests are encouraged to seek a qualified counselor in their local area.  However, when a guest’s circumstances warrant a continuation of their counseling relationship beyond their time at Fairhaven, an encripted HIPAA compliant distance counseling opportunity may be available at our published hourly rate.

Q: CAN WE BRING OUR CHILDREN?

A:  If the main focus for a guest’s visit is to secure marital counseling, then it is highly advisable that the couple arrange for childcare so that the couple can devote their undivided time and energy to their marital relationship. For individual counseling, where a spouse is available to care for the children during their partner’s counseling sessions, bringing the children may be an option.  Be aware that childcare services are not available at Fairhaven.  We do not permit children to attend adult counseling sessions.

Q: WHAT ARE THE COUNSELING RATES?

A:  The current rate for professional counseling at Fairhaven is $105 per hour (each 50-minute interval).  Payment is due at the time services are received.

Q: WILL INSURANCE COVER THESE COSTS?

A:  Although we do not bill insurance companies directly, at your request our counselor can provide you with an invoice at the end of your stay that you can submit to your insurance carrier.  Please be aware that doing so may carry a certain amount of risk as Fairhaven cannot control how that information may be used by your insurance company.  Also keep in mind that not all counseling expenses are reimbursable.  Many insurance companies limit reimbursement to one session per week.  It is the responsibility of the guest to verify their insurance coverage.  Check with your provider to see if counseling at Fairhaven will be treated as in-network or out-of-network services.

If you are considering using a Flexible Spending Account for reimbursement, contact your Flexible Spending Account administrator prior to your stay at Fairhaven to be sure you’re covered.  Though some Flexible Spending Accounts might allow reimbursement for distance or online counseling appointments, many insurance companies will not reimburse for distance or online counseling at this time. When in doubt, check with your insurance provider or Flexible Spending Account administrator prior to your visit.  In all cases, payment is expected at the time services are provided.

Q: IS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?

A:  Where there is a need for financial assistance, both Christian workers and laypersons may be eligible for financial help with their expenses at Fairhaven.   Applications for assistance involve a verification of need and often require a recommendation by a third party such as a pastor, district superintendent or supervisor. Finalizing the arrangements is done with Guest Services or the counselor prior to coming to Fairhaven.  If you have further questions, please contact us by telephone at 423-772-4269.
